    Description: 
    Portrait of George Hay (1765-1830), son-in-law of President James Monroe. Hay was a leader of the Virginia Democratic- Republicans, a political advisor to Monroe, and Federal Prosecutor during Aaron Burr's 1807 treason trial. He was a Richmond lawyer who also served as U.S. Attoney and as a federal judge in Virginia.

    Remarks: 
    Source reports that George Hay married Eliza, the elder of James Monroe's two daughters, in September 1808 in a ceremony at the Monroe's "Highland" plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia. The portrait was painted in the winter of 1809-1810.
