Formerly located Washington Plaza, 9th Street & 7th Avenue, Newark, New Jersey
Remarks:
Washington, a Newark native, lost his life on the torpedoed troopship Dorchester in 1943. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The sculpture was originally located on Washington Plaza in Newark on land granted by the Lackawanna Railroad. The plaza was named in honor of Father Washington. In 1981 the monument was found disfigured and covered with graffiti and plans were discussed to move it. In 1984 it was restored and moved to its present location at St. Rose of Lima church.
