    Inscription: 
    (On proper left of sculpture:) Leonari (sic) Craskey (On proper right bottom of sculpture:) Gorham Co. Founders (Dates of America's wars 1776 through 1964 on wall) signed Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    A striding World War I soldier with his proper right leg set forward. His proper right hand grabs the gunstock at his side and his proper left hand swings forward. The soldier is dressed in a winter uniform and carries a rucksack and other equipment, including extra shoes, a canteen, shovel, and gas mask. The figure is placed atop a base that rests on a larger granite slab. The sculpture and base are positioned in front of a granite wall that includes three cast bronze relief plaques depicting scenes from the Civil War, Revolutionary War and the Spanish-American war.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned and funded by the Town of Amesbury at a cost of $25,628. The sculpture initially was placed in front of the Amesbury High School and was dedicated on Armistice Day with an estimated 20,000 people in attendance. The high school burned down and the middle school was eventually built on the site. In 1950, the Amesbury High School class of 1949 raised $100 to secure lighting for the sculpture and the sculpture was rededicated in May 1950. The sculpture honors Amesbury residents who fought and died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Related newspaper clippings from Amesbury Daily News and Newburyport News are on file at the Amesbury Public Library. See also the Massachusetts Historical Commission WPA Guide, pg. 508.
