Remarks:
Commissioned by the American Merchant Marine Memorial Committee, this is reportedly the first national memorial to Merchant Marines. Twenty-five limited edition maquettes were cast by Arizona Bronze for donors who contributed $10,000 or more. The artist died shortly after his proposed work was accepted, and the sculpture was completed by his two sons, Marc and Michael D'Ambrosi. IAS files contain a fund raising brochure entitled "A Tribute Long Overdue" and related news clipping.
There is a plaque on a wall nearby which honors the sculptor, Jasper D'Ambrosi and contains a bust portrait of him in relief. The inscription reads: "1926 1986/JASPER D'AMBROSI/THE SCULPTURE, JASPER D'AMBROSI WAS BORN AND/RAISED IN WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA. HIS CREATION/OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS FINISHED AND/ACCEPTED IN EARLY 1986. HOWEVER, D'AMBROSI DIED/AUGUST 1 OF THE SAME YEAR BEFORE STARTING/THE FINAL CLAY MODEL. THE ENLARGEMENT WAS/DONE BY HIS SONS MARC AND MICHAEL AS A/TRIBUTE TO THEIR FATHER./THE 'JACOBS LADDER' WAS CAST AT THE FAMILY/FOUNDRY, ARIZONA BRONZE, TEMPE, ARIZONA/IN 1987."
