Description:
Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform, cap and coat. The cape of his coat is thrown over his proper right shoulder. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The granite sculpture stands on top of a tall, stepped granite base. The front face of the die has bas-relief crossed flags.

Remarks:
George I. Jordon, treasurer of the soldiers monument fund and designer of the monument, led the fund-raising drive for the monument. The sculpture cost $2,185; $1250 of which was funded by subscription, $500 was appropriated by the town. The sculpture was originally installed and dedicated in front of the Free Baptist Church, but was later moved across the street to its present location. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Manchester (NH) Union, Nov. 9, 1908; Rochester Courier, Oct. 23 and Nov. 13, 1908. IAS files contain excerpt from David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, pg. 67-68.
