Description:
A Civil War soldier stands with proper left foot forward holding his rifle at his proper right side. He holds the tip of the barrel of his rifle with both hands, the butt of which rests near his proper right foot. He wears a shoulder cape, softly folded back on the proper right side, over a wool coat pulled back from his proper left leg. The sculpture is mounted upon a tapered, four-sided base with a graduated bottom. A starred and striped shield decorates the top front of the base.

Remarks:
The sculpture was presented to the Town of Fabius by James Jerome Belden in memory of those from Fabius who served during the Civil War. The sculpture was installed on the site of the Belden Family homestead and dedicated on Independence Day, July 4, 1902. The bayonet on the end of the rifle was broken off when a stone was thrown at it. IAS files contain a related excerpt from a book compiled by the Fabius Central School District Adult Education Program entitled, "Fabius-Past and Present," DeRuyter, NY: The Gleaner Press, 1959, pg. 65-66.
