    Description: 
    Male figure of confederate soldier standing "at ready" position. He holds a rifle diagonally across the front of his body, with the barrel pointing upward at proper left. He wears a campaign hat with wide brim. Base is decorated with relief images. The middle section of the front of base shows the confederate flag in granite relief. The lower section of the front of base features a bronze plaque showing crossed cannons and cannonballs, to honor artillery. The lower section of the proper right side of base features a bronze plaque showing crossed sabres and bugle, to honor cavalry. The lower section of the back of base features a bronze plaque showing the State of Virginia seal. The lower section of the proper left side of base features a bronze plaque of crossed rifles and powderbelt, to honor infantry.

IAS files contain copy of magazine article, Kuhlthau, A. Robert, and Harry W. Webb, "Sculpture in and around Charlottesville: Confederate Memorials," The Magazine of Albemarle County History 48 (1990), which details the fundraising, commissioning, creation, and dedication.
