Remarks:
The origins of the fountain are unclear. According to various sources, the fountain was a gift of David E. Hill, a local businessman, upon the construction of Fire Station No. 2 in the 1890s. It was reportedly made in Bavaria or by Ferdinand Selle, an Akron resident, in the 1880s. The umbrella was replaced in 1921 by Augustus P. Jahant. When the fountain was restored in the 1960s, a date, possibly 1883, was found inscribed in the bottom. The fountain is disassembled every winter and stored indoors. It is also repainted on a regular basis. IAS files include related articles from the Akron Beacon Journal, Jan. 7, 1984 and Jan. 21, 1984.
