Four art deco reliefs illustrating the progress of printing from ancient China to America ca. 1928, the year the building was built. The reliefs are installed along the top of the building, just above the third story windows. The relief on the left side depicts a Chinese man with a scroll. The scroll is adorned with Chinese characters and a device for printing scrolls. The next relief depicts Johannes Gutenberg (ca. 1400-1468), the German inventor of movable type, dressed in 16th century attire with a ruff at the neck. The next relief depicts Benjamin Franklin using a quill pen. A small press is in the foreground. And the fourth relief depicts the 20th century figure of a man turning the gears of a printing press.

Remarks:
The reliefs were installed on this building built for Henry Tait Rodier in 1928 to house his business, the United Publishing Company which published the "Bulletin," a one page tabloid reporting sports results and news bulletins. The concrete building was designed by Henry Tait Rodier's brother, Gilbert Lacost Rodier and Arned Kundzin and built by Wahlegemuth at a cost of $20,000. IAS files contain an article from Trans-Lux, A Publication of the Art Deco Society of Washington (Winter 1988): pg. 6-7 which describes the reliefs and the history of the building in detail. IAS files also contain an April 1980 "Don't Tear it Down Downtown Survey" form which describes some of the history of the building and its reliefs.
