    Description:
Five grey-colored, fiberglass reliefs each depicting important people and events in the Civil Rights movement are installed in a small, gated garden on the lawn of the church. Each relief is set into its own small brick wall and base. The center relief, installed on the edge of a fountain basin, is larger than the other four and depicts King in the upper proper right corner giving a speech to a group of citizens. His mouth is open and he points with his proper right arm raised. The heads of the listening citizens surround him. Behind King are the faces of Ralph Abernathy, head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Violet Liuzzo, a slain civil rights worker. The four smaller reliefs depict others who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement: 1) the five Alabama school children, three boys and two girls, who were killed when their Sunday school was bombed; 2) John and Robert Kennedy; 3) Medgar Evers and Malcolm X; 4) Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney.

Funds for this memorial came from bake sales, fashion shows, benefit dinners, the Philadelphia Antipoverty Action Commission, and local businesses and churches. As plans progressed, the Fairmount Park Art Association provided additional funding for the sculptures. IAS files contain related articles from the Bulletin (Philadelphia), Oct. 11, 1971 and Oct. 3, 1971.
