Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned in 1938 by the Resettlement Administration for its then new Community Building. When the original grant for the sculpture was withdrawn, the artist worked for 50 cents an hour as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborer in order to complete it. In 1991, the Parkland Kiwanis and Greendale Historical Society provided grant money for cleaning and repairing the sculpture and it was rededicated August 8, 1991. The commemorative plaque was added at that time.
IAS files contain photocopies of newsclippings and other materials about the sculpture on file at the Greendale Historical Society (Greendale, WI); and excerpt from Arnold Alanen and Joseph A. Eden's "Main Street Ready Made New Deal Community of Greendale, Wisconsin."
