Remarks:
The sculpture is a copy of an original sandstone deer that was probably made by James L. Gehr as part of a Works Progress Administration project. When the original sculpture was decapitated by vandals, park authorities saved the pieces and sent them to New York to have the sculpture cast in bronze. The base is part of the original sculpture and was either carved by Works Progress Administration workers or by art students. People touch the sculpture for luck.
IAS files contain related correspondence from George Adams Dietrich, Jan. 10, 1994, who provides identity of original artist.
