Remarks:
IAS files contain photocopies of related ephemera from the Berlin Museum and an article from the Berlin Evening Journal, October 10, 1894. The idea for the monument, which cost approximately $4,000, originated in the early 1870s, with the Grand Army. A subscription was begun; the first substantial sum ($150.00) raised by the Women's Relief Corps in 1885. The base was fabricated by Bannerman Company; the die furnished by the Berlin & Montello Granite Company. The cornerstone and granite base were installed in 1887; the shaft, capital, and figure were installed and the monument dedicated in 1894. SOS! volunteer reports shaft may be marble; Berlin Evening Journal indicates shaft is smoothly cut granite.
