Dimensions:  Sculpture: approx. 6 x 3 x 3 ft.; Base: approx. 20 x 6 x 6 ft. Inscription:  (On front of base:) IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/VOLUNTEER/SOLDIERS & SAILORS/OF 1861-5/ERECTED BY/JOHN H. WILLIAMS POST No 4. G. A. R./AND WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS No 12./Assisted by the Loyal Citizens of Berlin/and Vicinity. (On front of shaft:) Grand Army of the Republic/Veterans of 1861-1866 unsigned Founder's mark appears. Description:  Union soldier supported by a stone (marble or granite) shaft with a granite base. He stands upright holding a furled flag in his proper left hand. His proper right hand reaches across the front of his body and rests on the handle of his saber. The front of the shaft is emblazoned with an eagle, a flag, and a five-pointed star. The idea for the monument, which cost approximately $4,000, originated in the early 1870s, with the Grand Army. A subscription was begun; the first substantial sum ($150.00) raised by the Women's Relief Corps in 1885. The base was fabricated by Bannerman Company; the die furnished by the Berlin & Montello Granite Company. The cornerstone and granite base were installed in 1887; the shaft, capital, and figure were installed and the monument dedicated in 1894.
