NEW YORK AND PROVIDENCE (On center round plaque, depicted as a wreath:) ERECTED/IN HONOR OF/THE MEN OF/WAYNE COUNTY/WHO SERVED THE/NATION DURING/THE WORLD WAR/1917 - 1919 (On bronze side plaques: lists of those who served) Founder's mark appears.
Description:
A full-length figure of a World War I Doughboy. The soldier stands at attention with body held erect, arms at sides, legs together, and toes turned slightly out. He wears a military uniform which includes a hat with a wide brim and rounded top, a short jacket with flap pockets and a tightly fastened high collar, pants which are loose and baggy to the knee but are wrapped from below the knee to the ankle, and a belt with five pouches, a canteen, and a bayonet attached. He holds the barrel of a rifle in his proper right hand. The butt of the rifle rests on the base beside his proper right foot.
The soldier stands on a horizontal extension of the base. The base extends as an exedra behind him, with a tall stele in the center, topped with an eagle with outspread wings. Three bronze plaques are on the lower half of the exedra.

Remarks:
IAS files contain related articles from Wayne County News (Wayne, WV), May 11, 1922, pg. 1 and May 18, 1922, pg. 1. The latter issue includes a photograph of the sculpture which shows two urns, now missing, which originally stood atop the two sides of the exedra. The monument cost approximately $12,000 and was funded by an act of legislature and special levy of five cents on eachone hundred dollars.
