Description:
A Civil War Union soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a military uniform consisting of a slouch cap, a thigh-length coat with high collar, long pants which fall to the top of the shoes and show little detail, and smooth, square-toed boots. He carries a knapsack and bedroll on his back. The moustached figure holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the rifle rests on the proper right front corner of the plinth and extends beyond the edge of it. His proper left leg is slightly bent and slightly forward, so that the toe of his boot extends slightly beyond the edge of the plinth. Attached to his belt are various pouches and a bayonet.
The base is a tiered granite shaft. In the middle of the front is a low relief of a flag and a round seal. At the center of the seal are three figures: an Indian in the center and a soldier at his proper left shaking hands with a sailor at his proper right. On the right side of the shaft is a low relief of crossed swords; on the rear is a low relief of crossed cannons, and on the left side is an anchor.
