Description:
A World War I soldier, facing north, standing erect and at attention. His legs are together, feet parallel. In his proper right hand, he grasps a rifle barrel. The rifle butt rests beside the toe of his proper right shoe. His proper left hand rests on his proper left thigh. His uniform includes a full-brimmed hat, a belt with ten pouches, a canteen, and a bayonet. He wears baggy trousers with wrapped calves, laced boots, and a shirt with a high-buttoned collar and pockets. He is supported at the rear by a stump which reaches to his hips. He stands atop a three-tiered stone base.

Remarks:
The statue came from Baltimore. It stands in front of the Old Grant County Courthouse, which is currently being rented by Shepherd College of Shepherdstown and is the site of their South Branch. The concrete base was built by Esmond Taylor.
