    Description: 
    A center panel flanked on either side by a smaller panel. The center panel is a low relief of a working miner, turned so that his back and proper right side faces out. The miner's proper right leg is bent as he steps up onto some rocks. His proper left leg is straight and carries his weight. A pick rests on his proper left shoulder. He wears loose-fitting coveralls which are tucked into high-topped work boots. He also wears a hard hat and a belt with two boxes or pouches attached. Around the relief is a decorative scroll design at the top of which is a depiction of the UMW seal. The seal consists of two clasped hands with crossed shovels and picks above and below. The two flanking panels list names of those who died in a 1940 mine explosion.

    For a related article see Welch Daily News (Welch, WV), June 3, 1958. The monument was erected by the United Mine Workers in memory of the 91 miners killed in the Bartley No. 1 mine explosion on Jan. 10, 1940.
