Title:
Confluence Project, Chief Timothy Park: Listening Circle, (sculpture).
Dates:
Commissioned 2000
Description:
Located where the Clearwater and Snake rivers meet, the Chief Timothy Park is the homeland of the Nez Perce. It is the only Confluence Project site that still resembles what Lewis and Clark saw as they passed through this area. The Listening Circle is planned as a large stone-rimmed earthwork sculpted out of a natural amphitheater. A Nez Perce blessing ceremony took place on the site in the spring of 2005.

Remarks:
The Confluence Project began in 2000 with a group of Pacific Northwest Native American tribes and civic groups from Washington and Oregon who commissioned Maya Lin to create an installation commemorating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806. The Confluence Project is a series of seven art installations placed along a 450 mile course in the Columbia River Basin. Each installation site marks a place where waterways merge or traditional peoples have gathered, and each was a meeting place for Native Americans and the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Confluence Project was initiated in 2000 with a budget of $27 million.
