    (Lower back of pedestal, raised:) "TO THE/CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS/OF RUSSELL COUNTY./A LOVING TRIBUTE TO THE/PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE" (Lower side of pedestal:) ERECTED/1914 unsigned
    Description: 
    A Confederate soldier stands in a marching stance, wearing a field uniform and a slouch hat. A rifle rests on his proper right shoulder with his proper right hand supporting the butt. A canteen is on his proper left side belt, and a blanket is tied over his proper left shoulder to his waist. A haversack is on his back waist, and a tree stump is behind him. The soldier is mounted on a tall pedestal with a decorated lower section that includes two short, upturned cannon barrels on the corner of one tier with either an orb or a block on the ledge above them. The lower section of the pedestal is inscribed and stepped, and the front includes a relief with crossed sabers above a relief emblem of crossed flags.

    Remarks: 
    Monument commemorates the Confederate soldiers of Russell County. Funded through private subscription. The monument has been relocated from the middle of Main Street. A flat portion that is visible in an older photo and lying in front of the pedestal is missing. Nearby plaque reads: (eagle)/IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/RUSSELL COUNTY VA./WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/WORLD WAR I/WORLD WAR II. For related information see: Benjamin J.
