The monument commemorates the Soldiers from Westford who fought in the Civil War, along with their chaplain John H. Woodward. Authorized by a vote of the town March 11, 1991, the Jericho Granite company supplied the monument, to be in place by August 29, 1911. John H. Woodward (1809-1886) joined the Vermont cavalry regiment as its chaplain. He also served in the state senate from 1856-1857 and 1860-1861.
