Remarks:
IAS files contain pages from "History of the Hoadley Monument and Unveiling Ceremonies," edited by La Roy Southworth, Middletown Springs, VT, 1904. The idea for the statue originated in 1903 at a meeting of the Congressional Society of Middleton Springs, at a cost not to exceed $2,000. The statue was a gift of Captain H. Hoadley, who was born in Middleton in 1847, enlisted for the Civil War at the age of 15 in 1862, and settled in Wallingford in 1868 as a blacksmith and carriage builder. The granite part of the sculpture was furnished by J. R. Adair of Great Falls, New York, and the bronze portion by the Monumental Bronze Company of Bridgeport, Ct., represented by B. W. Barker of Providence, Rhode Island. The surrounding granite coping is the work of J. D. Williams of Poultney, Vermont. See IAS files for photocopies of the sculpture (ca. 1904 and 1952), and photocopies of the original contracts signed between Adair and Hoadley. The cost of the figure was $457.50. IAS files also contain a copy of the sculpture's Inventory nomination form for the National Register of Historic Places.
