Soldier's Monument, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Soldier's Monument, (sculpture). Dates:  Dedicated Aug. 14, 1912. Medium:  White bronze on a Vermont granite base. Dimensions:  Sculpture: approx. 16 ft. x 35 in. x 35 in.; Base: approx. 8 x 62 x 62 in. Inscription:  (Inscription on north plinth:) Erected and presented to the town of Coventry, August 14, 1912, by Riley E. Wright, a former townsman, now residing in Baltimore, Md., captain of Co. H (Frontier Guards), 15th Vermont Volunteers, organized at Coventry. A tribute to the loyal sons of Coventry. (East plinth:) Soldier rest! thy warfare o'er,/Dream of fighting fields no more;/Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking,/Morn of toil nor night of waking. (South plinth:) 'Tis a rough land of rock and stone, and tree,/Where breathes no castled lord nor cabin'd slave,/Where thoughts and hands, and tongues are free,/And friends will find a welcome - foes a grave. (West plinth:) The safety and perpetuity of the republic are buttressed in the hearts of the/people, who, in the hour of danger become its invincible defenders. (Front base north:) Stand in thy place and testify/To coming ages long,/That truth is stronger than a lie,/And righteousness than wrong. (East base:) To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die./And though the warrior's sun has set/Its light shall linger round us yet,/Bright, radiant, blest. (South base:) Hearts of oak our ships,/Hearts of oak our men./One flag, one land, one heart, one hand,/Out nation evermore! (West base:) Of all human things nothing is more honorable or more excellent than to deserve well of one's country./A glorious death is his who for his country falls. unsigned Description:  Figure dressed in military uniform standing at parade rest holding the barrel of his rifle. He stands atop a multi-tiered base. The base has relief portraits of Lincoln, Grant, Dewey and Stannard on the upper die. The middle die has the G.A.R. badge, crossed swords, crossed muskets, and crossed canons. On the four tablets on the monument in raised letters are the names of 125 Coventry soldiers of the Civil War, 3 soldiers of the Revolutionary War, 7 from the War of 1812, and 4 from the Spanish-American War. The monument was proposed by Mr. Riley E. Wright, Sept. 26, 1911, who also provided the funding. A crowd estimated at 2,000 attended the dedication ceremony.
