    Description: 
    Abstract concrete construction based on the famous Rosenthal photograph of the soldiers raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. A long, sloped triangular base painted black represents the mountain. Above it are two white triangular shapes; the vertical shape represents the flagpole and the longer, horizontal shape represents the soldiers.

    Nearby plaque: "Harlon Block Memorial. Corporal Harlon Block was a native son. He was one of five Marines and one Navy man who raised the United States flag on Mount Suribachi during the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima. Two weeks later on March 1, 1945, he was killed in action. He was laid to rest in the Weslaco Cemetery with full military honors."
    Nearby plaque: "Memorial. Dedicated May 30, 1977. The Harlon Block Memorial is reality through the efforts of the Cueller Elementary School Activity Lab. Students, Pan American University Art Department and the City of Weslaco." The idea for the memorial was initiated by students at Cueller Elementary School. The sculpture was designed by Harris, a student at University of Texas Pan American and was fabricated by UTPA art students under the direction of Art Department Head, Jerry Bailey. IAS files contain copy of related article from McAllen Monitor, May 31, 1977.
