Remarks:
The sculpture was a Texas Sesquicentennial project which was funded by the Texas Commission on the Arts, along with local contributors. Nearby plaque reads: The Brazos Flower/1986/We step from the fields/and rise to see across the land/as distance calls. But we come from here,/this is our place, it is our home/and from this home we grow,/out past is the fertile earth./It warms the seed that goes from/bud to bloom. We expand like/turning petals of the flower./It is our sense of being/that is the spiraling vine,/the living sculpture. Petaled with life/we stand ready/to heed life's call,/James Surls,/sculptor.
