Remarks:
Father Pierre Jean De Smet left his native Belgium, came to America and began his missionary work in Dakota Territory in 1839 and continued until his death in 1873. He was known among the Indians as "Black Robe." The city of De Smet was named after him after his death. The statue is a replica of one erected to Father De Smet in 1984 in his hometown of Dendermonde, Belgium. De Smet residents raised $6,000 for the figure and an additional $7,000 for a granite base. Total cost was slightly over $16,000. The figure was fabricated in Dendermonde, Watertown Monument Works manufactured the granite base.
