Description:
Square, white, tapered shaft on a square gray base. Each side is topped by a projecting pediment; a laurel wreath carved in each pediment. Emblems on 3 sides of shaft with objects depicted in circular mottos: anchor on front, fallen tree on back, lyre on left.

Remarks:
Incoming report indicates artist is J. H. Villeneuve, but records inscribed signature as J. H. V. Villeneuve. IAS files include an unreferenced copy of a newspaper clipping which suggests this may be the first Confederate monument erected in the United States.
