Inscription:  (On rim of concrete fountain basin:) TO COMMEMORATE THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA BY CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IN 1492/THIS MONUMENT WAS DEDICATED ON THE TWELFTH OF OCTOBER 1992 (On southwest plaque:) First/voyage/of/Christopher Columbus/left/Paols, Spain/5 August 1492/arrived/San Salvador/12 October 1492 (On southeast plaque:) Second/voyage/25 September 1493/from/Cadiz, Spain/arrived/Hispaniola/(Haiti)/22 November 1493 (On northeast plaque:) Third/voyage/30 may 1498/from/San Lucar, Spain/arrived/La Trinidad/30 July 1498" (On northwest plaque:) Fourth/voyage/9 may 1502/from Cadiz, Spain/arrived/Martinique/15 June 1502 Description:  A bronze fountain sculpture depicting Columbus' ship resting on a dome-shaped network of metal bars designed to look like a globe. This metal frame rests on the rim of a circular fountain basin. Four water spouts positioned around the rim spray water on the ship. The paving stones around the fountain basin represent the points on a compass. A nearby concrete wall contains a bronze relief of a ship. The inscription on a nearby plaque reads:) In appreciation and gratitude to the many/who through their generosity/made this monument a reality/Dedicated:/October 12, 1992 (list of names and organizations). IAS files contain a 1993 visitor information brochure entitled "Hello Columbus 1992." Architect Alfred Panepinto designed the monument and architect Cee Jay Fredericks created the plaza.
