    Remarks:
The monument commemorates Jess Taylor, the first man from Greene County to die in the Civil War. Taylor, a member of the 7th (Union) Regiment, Virginia, died on Oct. 26, 1861. The monument was erected by the Gilmore Township Veterans' Association, and convened a meeting to that effect on Nov. 20, 1888. The monument was originally located across from the Methodist Church in New Freeport but was moved in the 1930s when the road was regraded. Simon White & Sons of Waynesburg moved the monument.
