Remarks:
Thomas L. Kane, founder of Kane, Pennsylvania, first came to McKean County, Pennsylvania in 1857 as a representative of the McKean and Elk County Land Improvement Company, and as a director in the Sunbury and Erie Railroad. Having become interested in the activities of the Mormons, he participated in securing the assistance of the government in the westward migration of the Mormons. The Mormon people, in gratitude for his support, erected a sculpture of him in the main rotunda of the Utah State Capitol. The Kane, Pennsylvania sculpture is a copy of the Utah State Capitol sculpture.
Kane is also credited with averting a Mormon rebellion by reaching an amicable settlement between the U.S. military and the Mormons. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Kane organized a regiment of McKean County woodsmen and hunters known as the "Bucktails." He was made a brigadier general in Sept. 1862, and resigned from the military in Nov. 1963 after the battle at Gettysburg. The sculpture of Kane is installed at the town's first chapel, which Kane built at the request of his aunt.
