    Description:
A figure of a frontiersman soldier from the Bucktail Regiment stands dressed in frontier attire. He wears a deer tail hat and holds his rifle barrel vertically with his proper right hand, the stock resting by his foot. His proper left hand is placed on his waist. The sculpture is mounted upon a square, rough-hewn, six-tiered base, and set upon a square foundation. Surrounding the monument is a chainlink fence with artillery piece chainposts on each of the four corners.

    Remarks:
The monument commemorates the "Bucktail" or "Wildcat District Bucktails" Regiment of the Civil War, which was formed in Driftwood, Pennsylvania from Northern Pennsylvania woodsmen. The figure is depicted in frontiersman attire because the regiment members had not yet been sworn into military service when they left Driftwood. The monument overlooks the river where the raft was launched to carry them to Harrisburg. The monument cost $2,500, funded through House Bill No. 1046 of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, approved on June 13, 1907. It was dedicated on April 27, 1908, on the forty-seventh anniversary of the departure of the Bucktails from Driftwood. The dedication also marked the annual reunion of the Bucktails, as well as the anniversary of General Grant's birthday. The sculpture was reportedly fabricated from metal from a cannon used at Gettysburg. The monument may have been struck by a truck at least once.
