Remarks:
Will Rogers (1879-1935), a writer and entertainer of Cherokee descent, was born and lived in Oologah. The sculpture was commissioned in 1992 by the Oolagah Historical Society for $100,000. The commission was suggested by Marian Clark, president of the Society, after a replica of Will Rogers' home was destroyed by arson in May 1992. An economic Development Grant from Tallgrass Resource Conservation and Development, (United States Department of Agriculture) contributed $3,650 for part of the cost of the base. Remaining funds were raised mostly through individual and corporate donations. The sculpture was cast at Metal Dynamics and the patina was applied by Frank Shopen and Eric Sweppe at Ad Astra Bronze. The pump was cast from a mold made from a Davey brand hand pump used in the town in the early twentieth century. Water spouts through the sculpted pump into a flagstone trough on the base. The SOS! survey form states that the horse's name is Soapsuds and attached documentation gives the horse's name as Comanche. The name of the monument came from the title of a biography of Will Rogers by David Randolph Milsten.
IAS files contain related articles from the Oologah Lake Leader, June 1, 1995 and Aug. 10, 1995; an invitation to the dedication and a brochure from the Oolagah Historical Society which lists the donors.
