2 pieces. Each: approx. 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 ft.

Identical sphinxes, half woman half lion, are installed on the grounds of City Hall. The lion's bodies are in a reclining pose with the front paws stretched forward and bent at the "elbow." The creatures have a woman's head with a long ringlet of hair hanging in front on both sides of the neck. Each has a patterned mantle on its back.

Formerly in the collection of Coulby, Harry C.,

The site which is now the City Hall was previously the Coulallenby Estate, owned by Harry C. Coulby. The estate changed hands several times between Mr. Coulby's death in 1929 and its purchase by the City in 1954. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. IAS files contain a related article from the Wickliffe Connection, vol. 2 no. 2, Summer 1987.
