Description:
A tall, granite shaft with a Union Army infantry soldier at the top and four other soldiers around the base. The soldier at the top of the shaft holds a musket out in front of him, grasping the barrel with his proper right hand over his left, at about waist high. The butt of the musket rests on the ground in front of him. His proper left leg is forward and bent at the knee. There are four soldiers standing on granite blocks that project out from the bottom of the shaft. Each soldier depicts a rank or function within the Union Army. On the front, or south, side stands a flag bearer holding a flag that drapes across his proper left shoulder; on the east side stands an officer with a sabre; on the west side stands a cannoneer; and on the north side stands a foot soldier. On the upper front section of the shaft is a bronze, oval medallion bearing a portrait of the monument's donor, James H. Freshour.
