    Description: 
    Standing on four legs, this holstein dairy cow is painted with typical black and white markings. Her head faces forward, and her four legs are parallel to one another, hooves on the ground. Surface is detailed, with veins, vessels and muscles apparent. Four steel cables anchor the cow.

    A nearby plaque reads: SALEM SUE/The World's Largest Holstein Cow/is 38 feet high, 50 feet long/and weighs 12,000 pounds./Salem Sue was erected in 1974 at a cost of/nearly (dollar sign) forty thousand dollars contributed by dairymen,/farmers, businessmen, the dairy industry, and/area residents. The New Salem Lions organized/the project, and the club continues to maintain/the site./The New Salem High School Athletic teams/boast the name "Holsteins" as a tribute to the/area's dairy industry.
    /New Salem is recognized as one of North Dakota's pre-eminent dairy center (end of plaque). IAS files contain tourist brochures with more information on New Salem and the cow, including illustrations and the words to a song about Salem Sue called "Ballad of the Holstein (Mooo-d Music)."
