Description:
A Civil War soldier stands tensed and ready, his weight on his straightened proper right back leg just before he moves forward. He holds his rifle in both hands diagonally across his body, proper right hand near the trigger, his left hand midway up the barrel. He has a short beard and mustache, and wears a broad-brimmed hat. He is dressed in boots with trousers that bunch and billow over the top. His short jacket is held close to his body at the waist by a belt with an inscribed buckle, and covered diagonally across the chest by a bedroll. His collar flares slightly. He carries a small pouch on the proper right front of his belt while a larger satchel hangs from a strap at his back. The sculpture is mounted upon a slightly tapered, base with a cornice that is surrounded by shrubbery.

Remarks:
The sculpture honors those from Caswell County who served during the Civil War. The sculpture was funded through the efforts of the Caswell County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, by gifts from various individuals, and by a County appropriation of $1,000. SOS! survey reports founder as American Bronze Company (sculpture base bears their signature), but a related excerpt in the IAS files from William S. Powell's "When the Past Refused to Die," Yanceville, NC: Caswell County Historical Association, pg. 222-224, lists designer and producer of Confederate soldier as J. F. Manning Company.
