    Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by members of the Junius Daniel Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. They were assisted by the ladies of Northampton County. The sculpture commemorates the Confederate soldiers and sailors of Halifax and Northampton counties who served during the Civil War. The sculpture was originally installed at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Fifth Street in 1908. During the week of July 19, 1934, the sculpture was relocated to the center of the intersection of Maple and Cemetery Streets to make way for a State Highway paving program. At the time of relocation, the sculpture was cleaned. One of the base plaques is stored at the police station, because it has been repeatedly stolen. IAS files contain a photocopy of a historic photograph of the sculpture in its original location from W.C. Allen's "History of Halifax County," Boston: The Cornhill Company, 1918. IAS files contain related articles from the Roanoke News, Sept. 10, 1908, Sept. 17, 1908, Sept. 24, 1908, and July 19, 1934.
