    Description: 
    Tall granite shaft topped by the figure of a Confederate soldier.
    The uniformed Confederate infantryman stands holding the barrel of a rifle in front of him with both hands, the butt of which rests on the ground in front of his proper right foot. He is dressed in uniform, with bayonet and bed roll. Behind his proper right leg is a tree stump. The sculpture is mounted atop a shaft with a stepped, rough-hewn bottom.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was installed by Colonel George Benton Alford in the yard of his Holly Springs residence to commemorate Wake County soldiers who served in the Civil War, World War I and the Spanish-American War. Alford served as leader of the 41st Regiment during the Civil War. IAS files contain an excerpt from Elizabeth Reid Murray's "Wake: Capital County of North Carolina, Vol. I, Prehistory through Centennial," Raleigh, NC: Capital County Publishing Company, 1983, pg. 473-474. IAS files contain a related article from the Raleigh News and Observer (North Carolina), Oct. 26, 1923, which lists names of soldiers listed on memorial.
