(On marble panel on front of base:) This monument that marks this highway we dedicate to the memory of Levi Butler, Jessie Lewis, Willard Lankford, Zibo Wilson, Lawson Williams, Ralph Walker, and Columbus Constant who paid the supreme sacrifices for their home and country, and also all those who served in the World War from Polk County, North Carolina. This monument was erected by the school children and patriotic citizens of the county. (On lower panel on front of base:) This monument is the untiring effort and patriotic devotion of W.A. Cannon - by his friends. unsigned
Description:
A fully uniformed World War I infantryman holds the barrel of his rifle with both hands in front of him. The butt of the rifle rests on the base. His uniform includes a wide brimmed hat, wrap leggings and hobnail boots. A knapsack is slung over his shoulder and a bayonet is attached to his belt. The figure is mounted on a base of field and river stones that features an imbedded, inscribed, marble panel.

Remarks:
Erected by the school children and patriotic citizens of Polk County, North Carolina. W. A. Cannon was instrumental in starting a fund drive for this monument to the seven men from Polk County who died serving in World War I. The monument also honors others from Polk County who served in the war. IAS files contain related article.
