    Description: 
    An abstract sculpture of an armless sentinel turning its head to the proper right and dipping its shoulder. Its proper left shoulder is raised and its proper left leg is extended. The figure is carved in broad textured planes, many triangular in form. The proper left leg and the face are modelled naturalistically. The face is only partially rendered. The sculpture is anchored to a concrete slab.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned for $5,300 by the North Carolina Arts Council as part of the Art-in-State Buildings Program. It was installed as part of a renovation project for Meadowview Cottage by Clearscapes architectural firm, with Steven Schuster as the project architect. The sculpture is drawn from the artist's Guardian Angel series. The label on the sidewalk at the foot of the sculpture reads: BE GARDINER/AMERICAN, b. 1950/1994 Vessel/Rose marble/Artworks for State Buildings Collection.
    IAS files contain: a copy of the April 1994 commissioning agreement; announcements and correspondence from the North Carolina Arts Council pertaining to the selection and commissioning of the sculpture, including diagrams of Meadowview Cottage renovation project by Clearscapes; a copy of the Artwork Specification Form, North Carolina Works for State Buildings Program, Artist Contract, Schedules A, B, and C; and a North Carolina Department of Administration memorandum, Aug. 16, 1994.
