    Description: 
    Full-length uniformed Civil War soldier stands atop a ten-tiered polished and rough-hewn base. The figure wears a long coat and kepi. He also wears a knapsack with a bedroll on top and a pouch on the bottom. Other uniform items include a water bottle on a strap over the proper left shoulder and a scabbard on the proper left side. The pedestal has several decorative relief elements including flags, a laurel wreath, an anchor, cannons and various coats of arms.

    IAS files contain a related article from the Utica Morning Herald, March 11, 1899 with detailed dimensions and an excerpt from "Waterville, New York Centennial History 1871-1971 (Sherbourne, NY: Waterville Centennial Incorporated, 1971).
    In October of 1879, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Association of the towns of Sangerfield and Marshall was formed to beginning planning for the memorial. When erected in 1898, the $2,000 memorial was topped by a model of mortar and was financed by public subscription. The soldier was added to the memorial in 1904. Its cost of $1,350 was also raised through public subscription. The memorial base was restored in 1994 because of cracks.
