(On east side of monument:) In remembrance of the soldiers and sailors of the Village of Shortsville Manchester and Surrounding country who fought to save the union in the Rebellion of 1861-1865 (On north side of monument:) On fame's eternal camping ground/their silent tents are spread/and glory guards with solemn round/the bivouac of the dead (On west side of monument:) They saved their country from Disunion/Emancipated four million's (sic) of slaves/and crushed treason and Rebellion./When we remember how and for what they died, it seems ignoble to be alive/ (On south side of monument:) Erected by the Holendeen Post Monument Associations of Post #107 Dept. of N.Y./G.A.R.
Description:
Full-length granite figure of a Civil War soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform, cap and overcoat. He has a moustache. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground near his feet. The sculpture stands atop a five-tiered granite base. On the front of the base at the top is a recessed star.
