Description:
Full-length figure of a Civil War soldier. He wears a uniform, overcoat and cap. The cape of his coat is thrown over his proper right shoulder. He holds a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The figure stands atop an ornately decorated zinc monument adorned with drapery and arched pediments. the zinc monument is seated on a granite block.

Remarks:
The monument, which was erected by the soldiers and citizens of Saranac Valley, commemorates the 416 local men who served in the Grand Army of the Republic. The monument cost $1,500. The sculpture was dislodged in the 1960s or early-1970s by a hurricane. It was filled with cement and reinstalled on the same base. IAS files contain transcriptions of names listed on monument.
