Remarks:
The sculpture was installed by the citizens of Leicester in honor of the soldiers from Leicester who fought during the Civil War. The base was installed in 1910 and was dedicated on September 12, 1911; however, the sculpture was installed and dedicated a year later. Landscape architect Allan DeForest of Rochester, New York, designed the Leicester village square and the site for installation of the sculpture. During World War II an honor roll was placed near the sculpture listing names of local men and women who were serving in the war. It was later removed after being damaged and the spot was planted with rose bushes. IAS files contain a related article from the Livingston Republican (Geneseo, NY), June 1, 1972 and June 15, 1972.
