    Monument to the Memory of the Brave Sons/of Urbana, who fought to Preserve the/Union in 1861-5. Erected through/the Efforts of Monroe Brondage/Post, No. 470, G.A.R. of/Hammondsport, N.Y. (On front of monument:) MONROE BRONDAGE/POST NO. 470/GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC/A.D. 1900/1861-1865
    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a Civil War soldier. He wears a uniform including cap and overcoat. The cape of his coat is flung over his proper right shoulder. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The granite sculpture stands atop a four-tiered granite pedestal. On the front face of the top tier is a relief of crossed rifles.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was originally installed at the corner of Main and Lake Streets and was erected by G.A.R. Post #470. It was relocated to the museum in 1968. The contract for relocation was awarded to E. R. Wolcott, Inc. of Big Flats, NY. The original installation around the monument included cannon and two piles of cannonballs which are no longer in place. IAS files contain copy of related museum correspondence. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Corning Leader, April 10, 1968 and June 19, 1978; and Hammondsport Herald, Oct. 24, 1900 and June 12 and 26, 1901.
