Remarks:
Fairfield Academy was organized in 1802 and was chartered in 1803. A separate medical department became the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York and was chartered in 1812. It was the second medical college in New York and the sixth in the country. It held its last classes in 1840. The academy continued in 1839 as Fairfield Seminary and trained both men and women. From 1891 to 1902 it served as a military academy. Due to new transportation routes and better local schools, the academy closed its doors in 1902. IAS files contain the names of the committee members which appear on the monument. IAS files contain transcription of the inscription that appears on a cast aluminum sign placed next to the monument in 1965. The plaque describes the history of the Academy and list some distinguished alumni. IAS files contain a related article from the Utica Daily Press, Aug. 27, 1923.
