The sculpture was dedicated on July 12, 1970, the 21st anniversary of the founding of the Deerfield Fire Company. The sculpture was restored in 1988 by Teresa DiSpirito, the artist's daughter, and Frank Cecere and Mitchell Lowell, under the artist's supervision. Second and fifth graders from Deerfield Elementary School spearheaded the restoration effort by sending letters to the artist and the fire company asking for their help.
