Remarks:
The sculpture cost $1,400 and was installed by the Czecho-Slovak Protective Society (C.S.P.S.) and the Farmer's Club to honor Bohemian martyr, Jan Hus (1369?-1415). Contributors to the project include members of both organizations, as well as the ladies of the C.S.P.S., and local donors. The sculpture was fabricated in Vermont. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Raymond E., Judith A. and Kathryn E. Spinzia's "Long Island: A Guide to New York's Suffolk and Nassau Counties," Hippocrene Books, 1991, pg. 16-18.
A Czech priest born in Husinetz and educated in Prague, Hus was an early Reformationist who challenged the Catholic Church and was excommunicated in 1410. In 1414, Hus was invited by Emperor Sigismund to defend his views at the Council of Constance with a guarantee of safety from King Wenceslaus. Instead, the two imprisoned Hus and he was burned as a heretic on July 6, 1415. This act of treachery led to the Hussite War.
