    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a Civil War soldier. He wears a uniform, overcoat and cap. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the gun rests on the ground near his feet. The Barre granite sculpture stands on a Barre granite pedestal and base. The base ends in three steps. On the shaft of the pedestal is a medal with ribbon. The medal is topped by an eagle with extended wings sitting on the ends of two cannon.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was funded by subscriptions and was sponsored by citizens of the towns of Ballston, Milton and Malta (NY). Cost of the monument was estimated at $2,500. During the 1960s and 1970s, the monument was popularly known as "Civil Sam". IAS files contain copies of related articles from Ballston Journal, Jan. 14, April 28 and 30, June 9, 16, and 23, 1888, including transcriptions of names listed on honor rolls.
