    Full-length figure of an African-American soldier stepping down from a boulder on which he was seated for guard duty. He holds binoculars in his proper left hand and a rifle in his proper right hand.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned by State Representative William Porter for $50,000. The sculpture was privately funded. It commemorates black members of the United States Cavalry who were stationed at southwestern forts, including Fort Selden. They were called "Buffalo Soldiers" by the American Indians out of respect for their fighting ability. The sculpture's dedication coincided with the 128th anniversary reunion of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association in Las Cruces.
