The memorial honors all veterans of the Vietnam War and cost approximately $200,000. The project was underwritten by the New Jersey State Association of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Commission was created in 1986 to oversee the creation and construction of the memorial. Architect Hien Nguyen designed the memorial site. Thomas J. Warren created the sculpture, cast at Johnson Atelier.
Nearby plaque reads: I am N.J. Vietnam Veteran Memorial/Now that I am done,/With their loved ones, the veterans come./They come slowly, somewhat reserved,/They come to honor those who died while they/served./Inside my walls of cement and stone,/You can walk with your memories and not be alone./You can talk with old friends and with comrades/you never met,/You have a lot in common, you are all Vietnam Vets./You don't have to speak, neither do they,/Your feelings are the medium you speak with today./So come visit me whenever you can,/I am here waiting to welcome you home from/Vietnam.
